Setting up a Security Key
I would strongly recommend that you read this section before starting because there is a time limit on completing this.
- Go to ourspace then click on the profile image or your initials then click on “View Account”
- Next click on Microsoft “Security info” tab
- You will be asked to login and authenticate with your current method.
- Note for IT: If the user does not have a method, you will need to go to the Azure admin portal and add an authentication method like your mobile, this will be deleted later on
- If you get a screen saying about “Let’s secure you account” just click skip for now.
- Click on “Add sign-in method”.
- This will bring up a lot of options to choose from, the one we are looking for is called “Security key”
- This first screen will ask for the type of key, you need to select “USB Device”
- Next screen just needs to click “Next”
- The page will redirect to start the Security key setup.
- Select Security Key then click Next
- Next you will have two popups you just need to click OK on both of them.
- Next you will need to think of a 6+ digit PIN for your key, which you need to remember because will be required every time Microsoft ask for the security key.
- After you have entered your PIN in both boxes click next
- Now you will need to tap flashing gold contact two times until it saves the passkey.
- Now click OK on the passkey saved
- Next you will be asked to give the Security Key a name, this can be anything you would like. Then click Next and Done on the next screen.
- Next we need to setup a password reset method, which will need to be either a personal email or 3 security questions. This needs to be done otherwise you will keep getting “Let’s Secure your account” every time you sign into Microsoft and use SSO.
- Click on “Add sign-in method”.
- This will bring up a lot of options to choose from, the one we are looking for is called “Email” or “Security Questions” which are at the bottom of the list.
- After you have picked one follow the instructions to complete the Email or Security Questions.
-
Once a method has completed, you will need to remove the landline phone and the mobile phone number.
- IT note: If they have an Microsoft Authenticator on a working device you can leave it.
